Meet
Whitey Schmidt
The Blue Crab Guru
Whitey Schmidt spends most of his days eating
crabs and writing crab and seafood cookbooks
full of blue crab recipes. We've seen some
obsessions in our time, but this guy takes the crab cake.
Named the "Guru of the Blue Crab" by
Chesapeake Bay Magazine, Whitey is known not only for his love of
Crabs, but for his knowledge of how to create and prepare some of
the finest, mouthwatering crab recipes known the world over.
Whitey acquired that "crab knowledge" over
the past thirty years by consuming thousands of crabs, visiting
hundreds of crab houses in the Chesapeake Bay Region. His
research included questioning chefs and crab handlers, and
gathering recipes, anecdotes and tips on care, cooking and
consuming Maryland Blue Crabs. Armed with that knowledge, the Crab
Crusader has written ten books that focus on Chesapeake Bay area
and recipes for preparing crabs and seafood. Those recipes
run the gamut from classic blue crab recipes like
Port of Solomons Crab
Soufflé
to innovative creations such as
Buy Boat Crab Cioppino with old favorites like
Eastern Shore Crab Fritters.
By
chance, Whitey was Born and raised in the "crab state" (Maryland).
By choice he resides in Crabby Crisfield, Maryland, the self
proclaimed "crab capital of the world." Through hard work
and nearly a lifetime of research, Whitey has become THE
respected authority on the best ways to prepare dishes that
feature the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab. His recipes, cookbooks
and crab stories have been featured in The Washington Post, The
Baltimore Sun, Southern Living Magazine, The Nor'easter Magazine,
Maryland Magazine, Chesapeake Bay Magazine, Chesapeake Life
Magazine and countless Bay area town newspapers.
